Demystifying the Grammar School Journey

How we traded 11+ anxiety for a simple formula

If you're a parent just starting out on the grammar school prep journey, I want you to take a deep breath. Drop your shoulders. Unclench your jaw.

I'm writing this because not too long ago, I was exactly where you are now. And if I could go back in time and give myself one piece of advice, it would be this:

Don't let the noise scare you.

When my son first hit the age where we had to start thinking about grammar school exams, I was absolutely terrified. I didn't know the first thing about the process. The format, the timings, the acronyms — it all felt like a foreign language.

And the worst part? The playground echo chamber.

The Trap of Parent Anxiety

It feels like everyone you talk to has a horror story or a secret formula:

“You haven't started yet? We began in Year 3!”

— Overheard at the school gate

“You're not using that specific tutor? I hear their pass rate is dropping.”

— The WhatsApp group

“That parent is following a completely different schedule — should I be copying them?”

— Your own inner voice at 2am

The anxiety creeps in fast. You find yourself constantly second-guessing every decision. Are we doing the right thing? Are we doing it wrong?

For a while, our household was tense. The exam felt like a dark cloud hanging over our weekends. Every mock test felt like a high-stakes crisis, and every mistake felt like a step backward. We spent hours travelling to trial exams, sitting through tense car rides, and coaching through the fatigue.

It felt tedious. It felt draining.

But then, midway through the journey, something clicked.

I realised we were doing it all wrong — not because of what we were studying, but how we were viewing it.

The Turning Point

Once I tuned out the playground gossip and looked at the actual mechanics of the exam, the fog cleared. I realised that the 11+ isn't a mythical monster. It's actually a very simple, two-step process:

📘

1. Learn the concepts

Break down the specific question types they've never seen before.

🔁

2. Practise consistently

Build speed and confidence through regular, bite-sized repetition.

That's it. It isn't a secret society. It's just skill-building.

Enjoying the Journey

When we stripped away the pressure, the dynamic changed completely. Yes, we still had to do the work. We still did the mock exams, and we still spent targeted time analysing mistakes — because learning from what you get wrong is where the actual growth happens.

But it stopped being a painful chore.

We realised that this journey didn't have to be wrapped in anxiety. It could be an incredible bonding experience. It was an opportunity to teach my son resilience, how to handle setbacks, and how to approach a big challenge with a calm, focused mind.

My Advice to You

Stressed parent during 11+ preparation

If you are currently in the thick of it, or just dipping your toes in — run your own race.

💚 Your child doesn't need a stressed-out coach — they need a supportive cheerleader.

🚫 Don't worry about what the parent in the WhatsApp group is doing.

🎉 Celebrate the small victories. Treat mistakes as data points, not failures.

⏰ Consistent, bite-sized practice beats anxiety-ridden cramming every single time.

You've got this, and more importantly, so do they. 💪
